All Tax Preparers Are Not Created Equal For Clergy Returns

amended

It is not unusual for a minister to rely solely on a general tax professional who may or may not specialize in church and clergy tax matters. It is not enough anymore to just ask if the tax preparer does ministers’ taxes, but ask the tax preparer about specific tax issues that impact ministers’ income taxes. For instance, ask the tax preparer about Deason Rule. If your tax preparer has not heard of this ruling, it may be time to switch to Clergy Financial Resources.

Online tax software are great programs for basic secular returns but is often times challenged by the complexity of a clergy return. These software packages do not address some tax rules unique to ministers such as housing allowance, Deason Rule, etc. which will greatly affect the accuracy of your return. Therefore, clergy using an online tax software package will require extra manual steps to complete and file their return, additional knowledge relating to clergy tax law and extra time to learn how the tax laws apply to your return.
