Even though economic impact payments are brand new in 2020, scammers are already using the new terminology to trick people into giving up their money or their financial information. Here are some tips from IRS on avoiding these schemes:

  • IRS will not call you to verify payment information for the economic impact payment.
  • Retirees do not need to do anything to get these economic impact payments- no additional actions are required.
  • Be wary of anyone suggesting they can get a refund or payment for you faster. There is no fast track option for payments.
  • If you receive a check that is not cashable, it may be a fake to trick you into calling them or giving them information online.
  • Do not open unsolicited e-mails from IRS.
  • In general, avoid giving out your personal information over the phone or internet, and do not interact with scammers.
  • You can report scammers at https://www.irs.gov/privacy-disclosure/report-phishing
