The 1040 filing deadline is one week away. If you still have not filed or started gathering your information, there are two big things you can do to make your life easier down the road.

First, file an extension. Your return deadline can be extended to October 15th, 2020, but only if you ask. You can request the extension yourself at https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/extension-of-time-to-file-your-tax-return or through your tax preparer.

Second, make a payment. If you think you are going to owe on your return, it is a good idea to make a payment now, rather than owing penalty and interest later. If you don’t know how much you are going to owe, use last year’s return as a reference and make sure you have paid at least that much in withholding and estimated payments.

If you are looking for a 1040 preparer, Clergy Financial Resources specializes in Clergy tax. From first call to retirement, we have the experience necessary to file your return correctly. For more information, visit our website at https://www.clergytaxnet.com/services/clergy-tax-preparation/
